BUILD SMART ACADEMY • MEASUREMENTS • QUANTITY CALCULATION
MEASURE ACCURATELY. CALCULATE CONFIDENTLY. BUILD SMARTER.
Accurate measurements are an important starting point when estimating tile quantities and planning building materials.
Understanding the difference between length and area, converting measurements correctly and accounting for skirting can help you prepare a more reliable material estimate.
Actual quantities may vary depending on the room layout, tile arrangement, cutting requirements, installation method and product packaging.
1. UNDERSTAND THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LENGTH AND AREA
Length (m) measures distance in one direction.
Examples include:
The length of a wall.
The perimeter of a room.
The length of skirting required.
Area (m²) measures a two-dimensional surface.
Examples include:
The floor area of a room.
The surface area of a wall.
The total area to be tiled.
Remember: Metres (m) and square metres (m²) are different units. Do not use them interchangeably.
2. COMMON LENGTH CONVERSIONS
Measurement
Conversion
Measurement Conversion 1 kilometre (km) 1,000 metres (m) 1 centimetre (cm) 0.01 metres (m) 1 millimetre (mm) 0.001 metres (m) 1 inch (in) 0.0254 metres (m) 1 foot (ft) 0.3048 metres (m) 1 yard (yd) 0.9144 metres (m) 3. COMMON AREA CONVERSIONS
Measurement
Conversion
Measurement Conversion 1 square centimetre (cm²) 0.0001 m² 1 square millimetre (mm²) 0.000001 m² 1 square foot (ft²) Approximately 0.092903 m² 1 square yard (yd²) Approximately 0.836127 m² 1 acre Approximately 4,046.856 m² 1 hectare 10,000 m² Important: Area conversions are not the same as length conversions. For example, converting square feet to square metres requires an area conversion factor, not the linear conversion for feet.
4. HOW TO CALCULATE FLOOR AREA
For a rectangular room:
Floor area = Length × Width
Both measurements must use the same unit.
Example: A room measured in feet
Suppose a room measures:
Length: 15 ft
Width: 12 ft
Convert the measurements into metres:
15 ft × 0.3048 = 4.572 m
12 ft × 0.3048 = 3.6576 m
Now calculate the area:
4.572 m × 3.6576 m = approximately 16.72 m²
Estimated floor area: 16.72 m²
This is the measured floor area before adding an allowance for cuts, breakages or future replacement.
5. HOW TO CALCULATE SKIRTING REQUIREMENTS
Skirting is the strip of material installed along the bottom of a wall, usually around the perimeter of a room.
It can provide a finished appearance and help protect the lower portion of the wall.
Skirting height depends on the architectural design and project requirements. Common examples include 10 cm and 15 cm, equivalent to 0.10 m and 0.15 m.
Step 1: Calculate the room perimeter
For a rectangular room:
Perimeter = 2 × (Length + Width)
Step 2: Determine the skirting height
Convert the chosen height into metres.
10 cm = 0.10 m
15 cm = 0.15 m
Step 3: Calculate the skirting area
Skirting area = Skirting length × Skirting height
Worked example
Suppose a room measures:
Length: 5 m
Width: 4 m
Floor area: 20 m²
First, calculate the perimeter:
2 × (5 m + 4 m) = 18 m
If the skirting height is 10 cm:
18 m × 0.10 m = 1.80 m²
If the skirting height is 15 cm:
18 m × 0.15 m = 2.70 m²
The combined floor and skirting areas would therefore be:
Requirement
Calculation
Area
Floor
5 m × 4 m
20.00 m²
Skirting at 10 cm
18 m × 0.10 m
1.80 m²
Floor + 10 cm skirting
20 + 1.80
21.80 m²
Skirting at 15 cm
18 m × 0.15 m
2.70 m²
Floor + 15 cm skirting
20 + 2.70
22.70 m²
These totals are surface-area estimates before wastage or cutting allowances.
Important skirting considerations:
Subtract doorways and other openings where skirting will not be installed.
Confirm the intended skirting height and design.
If skirting is cut from floor tiles, the number of boxes required depends on the cutting layout, usable pieces, tile dimensions and cutting losses.
Do not assume that the calculated skirting area translates directly into the same number of boxes you would purchase for an uninterrupted floor.
For complicated room layouts, obtain a detailed measurement and cutting estimate.
6. UNDERSTAND TILE SIZE AND BOX COVERAGE
Tile size describes the dimensions of an individual tile. Box coverage tells you how much surface area the tiles in one box cover according to the manufacturer's packaging.
Here are illustrative examples:
Tile size Area per tile Quantity per box Box coverage 60 × 60 cm 0.36 m² 4 tiles 1.44 m² 60 × 120 cm 0.72 m² 2 tiles 1.44 m² 30 × 60 cm 0.18 m² 8 tiles 1.44 m² These examples are for illustration only. Actual quantities per box and coverage vary by product. Always confirm the packaging specifications for the exact tile you intend to purchase.
7. ESTIMATE THE NUMBER OF BOXES
A basic estimate is:
Number of boxes = Required tile area ÷ Coverage per box
For example, if the measured floor area is 20 m² and the selected tile covers 1.44 m² per box:
20 ÷ 1.44 = approximately 13.89 boxes
Since tiles are purchased in whole boxes, you would round up to 14 boxes for the basic floor-area estimate.
However, this is not necessarily the final order quantity.
Before placing an order, consider:
- Cutting and layout requirements.
- Room shape and dimensions.
- Tile pattern and orientation.
- Breakages and handling losses.
- The manufacturer's packaging.
- Whether skirting will be cut from the same tiles.
- A reasonable reserve for future repairs or replacements.
8. ALLOW FOR CUTTING AND WASTAGE
The allowance required depends on the layout, tile size, installation pattern and complexity of the space.
A straightforward rectangular room may require a different allowance from a room with many corners, narrow sections, diagonal patterns or complex cuts.
Avoid adding a fixed percentage without considering the actual project.
A professional estimator or installer can help determine an appropriate allowance for the layout and product.
9. COMMON MEASUREMENT MISTAKES TO AVOID
- Mixing feet, inches, centimetres and metres in the same calculation.
- Confusing metres with square metres.
- Using a length conversion factor to convert area.
- Forgetting to calculate skirting separately.
- Assuming every tile box has the same coverage.
- Rounding down the required number of boxes.
- Ignoring openings, corners and cutting requirements.
- Treating the calculated surface area as the final purchase quantity without checking the layout.
BUILD SMARTER WITH ALL TILES LAND GH
Accurate measurements are the foundation of a more reliable material estimate. The next step is to confirm the tile specification, packaging coverage, intended application and installation requirements.
For complex layouts, large projects or cut-to-size skirting, provide your dimensions and drawings so the requirements can be assessed more carefully.
BUILD SMART ACADEMY • PRICING • MATERIAL PLANNING
UNDERSTAND THE PRICE. COMPARE THE VALUE.
The price of a tile is only one part of the purchasing decision. To compare products accurately, you need to understand the specification, coverage, intended application and total quantity required for your project.
At All Tiles Land GH, we encourage customers to compare products using the details that matter to their project—not price alone.
1. UNDERSTAND THE UNIT OF SALE
Tiles may be priced by the box, square metre or another clearly stated sales unit.
Before comparing prices, confirm:
- The tile size.
- The number of tiles per box.
- The coverage per box.
- The price per box or square metre.
- The product finish.
- The intended application.
2. HOW TO CALCULATE THE PRICE PER SQUARE METRE
When a tile is sold by the box:
Price per m² = Price per box ÷ Coverage per box
Example
Suppose a box costs GH₵216 and covers 1.44 m².
GH₵216 ÷ 1.44 = GH₵150 per m².
The calculated tile price is GH₵150 per m², before any additional costs that may apply.
This example is illustrative and does not represent a current product quotation.
3. HOW TO ESTIMATE THE BASIC TILE COST
Basic material cost = Number of boxes × Price per box
Suppose your project requires 20 m² of tile, and the selected product covers 1.44 m² per box.
20 ÷ 1.44 = approximately 13.89 boxes.
The basic requirement is 14 boxes before any additional allowance.
If each box costs GH₵216:
14 × GH₵216 = GH₵3,024.
This is an illustrative material estimate only. The final order quantity and cost depend on the project layout, required allowance, current product price and packaging.
4. WHAT CAN AFFECT TILE PRICING?
Prices may vary depending on:
- Tile material and manufacturing process.
- Size, thickness and technical specifications.
- Surface finish and design.
- Product grade and consistency.
- Brand and country of origin.
- Packaging and box coverage.
- Stock availability and supply conditions.
- Order quantity.
- Delivery location and transport arrangements.
- Special cutting or project-specific requirements.
A higher price does not automatically mean a product is suitable for every space. Suitability should be assessed against the project's needs and the manufacturer's specifications.
5. COMPARE LIKE WITH LIKE
Before choosing between two products, compare their actual specifications.
Comparison point
What to confirm
- Tile size
Are the dimensions the same?
- Material
Are both products suitable for the intended application?
- Finish
Are the surface finishes comparable?
- Box coverage
Does each box cover the same area?
- Technical suitability
Does the product meet the project's requirements?
- Price basis
Are you comparing price per box or per m²?
- Delivery
Are delivery costs included or quoted separately?
- Availability
Is the required quantity available?
6. LOOK BEYOND THE TILE PRICE
Your overall project budget may also include adhesive, grout, levelling materials, installation labour, cutting, delivery and other finishing items.
These costs depend on the product and the project. Confirm what is included in each quotation so you can compare offers fairly.

BUILD SMART ACADEMY • PRODUCT KNOWLEDGE • FINISHING MATERIALS
CHOOSE THE RIGHT FINISH FOR THE RIGHT SPACE.
The best tile for a project is one that meets the requirements of the space, performs as intended and supports the design you want to achieve.
Before choosing a tile, consider where it will be installed, how the space will be used, the finish you prefer and the manufacturer's guidance.
1. START WITH THE APPLICATION
Different spaces have different requirements.
Living rooms and bedrooms
Consider the overall design, maintenance needs, tile size, finish and relationship between the floor and other interior finishes.
Kitchens
Consider cleaning requirements, the intended installation surface and whether the selected product is suitable for the specific floor, wall or backsplash application.
Bathrooms and wet areas
Pay particular attention to slip resistance, water exposure, installation requirements and the suitability of the product for the intended wet-area application.
Outdoor spaces and compounds
Consider weather exposure, surface texture, drainage, slip resistance and the manufacturer's outdoor-use recommendations.
Swimming pools
Use products specifically suitable for pool applications. Confirm compatibility with the pool environment, water exposure and installation system.
Stairs and high-traffic areas
Consider edge detailing, slip resistance, impact exposure and the appropriate finishing accessories.
2. UNDERSTAND TILE FINISHES
Polished finishes
Can create a reflective, refined appearance. Check whether the specific product is suitable for the intended floor or wall application and whether its slip characteristics meet the project's needs.
Matt finishes
Often provide a softer, less reflective appearance. Suitability still depends on the product specification and installation environment.
Textured finishes
May be useful where surface texture is part of the design or functional requirement. Do not assume every textured product is suitable for every outdoor or wet-area application.
Wood-look porcelain
Can provide the visual character of timber while retaining the characteristics of the particular porcelain product. Confirm its technical suitability for the intended space.
3. CONSIDER TILE SIZE AND LAYOUT
Large-format tiles can create a more continuous visual appearance, but they require appropriate substrate preparation, handling, cutting and installation.
Smaller formats may be useful for particular layouts, detailing or applications.
The best format depends on the space, design, installation conditions and product specifications.
4. CHECK THE PRODUCT SPECIFICATION
Before purchasing, confirm:
- Exact tile dimensions.
- Product material and grade.
- Surface finish.
- Number of pieces per box.
- Coverage per box.
- Recommended application.
- Installation and maintenance guidance.
5. PLAN THE COMPLETE FINISH
Tiles are only one part of the finished space. Depending on your project, you may also need to consider adhesives, grout, skirting, trims, sanitary ware, waterproofing products and other finishing materials.
Check compatibility between the selected products and the installation system.
